The weather in the UK has taken a turn and now with the end of British Summertime long nights are drawing in.  Fear not, this means layering and wrapping up and time, for perhaps one of our favourite collections, knitwear.

Think Nordic knits and Pringle patterns and you'll be on the right path to the AW18 trend for sweaters.

Bomberang Nordic Patterned Sweater

These heavily patterned sweaters have been seen in all collections from the high street to Couture and at Khaki Surfer we have a wide range from premium brands such as Boomerang, Strellson, Paul Smith, Tommy Hilfiger, Gant and Brax and in XS to XXXL.

These patterned sweaters owe much of their design origins to the Siwash or Cowichan sweaters hand made by the Cowichan women from SE Vancouver Island, British Columbia, with a nod to Fair Isle techniques from the Shetland Islands and to the Argyle pattern from Western Scotland.

Traditionally spun with pure wool or cashmere (Kashmir goat) these days nylon and cotton may also be incorporated into the yarns to assist with modern day washing.

These could be seen on the catwalks back in January in all the major AW18 collections in Paris, London and Milan we love this ski themed sweater by Hermes as featured in the Guardian 'Autumn/winter 2018: the key menswear trends' guide by Helen Seamons (23rd Jan 2018)

Such knitwear has traditionally been on the pricey side due to the labour intensive hand processing of the wool, dyes and knit however, treated well and your investment should last years.  If you have purchased a pure wool or cashmere garment you must learn how to wash it properly and protect it from the very hungry larvae of the Tinea Pellionella moth!

Typically wash woollens at a low temperature and preferably by hand however follow the clothing garment labels to ensure that you get it right. Need some help to ensure you don't shrink your favourite new sweater to toy size?  We've found this great guide by Real Men Real Style to assist you.

It is important to also think about the laundry detergent you use as your regular brand may not be the best for washing delicate fabrics by hand or machine.  From those widely available in supermarkets such as Ecover to natural cleaning remedies from companies such as Mangle & Wringer - it definitely pays to do your research!
